One of the joys of the Flemish Coast is that the shops are open on a Sunday. If you are looking for international designer products, Knokke-Heist is the place to find them, but Ostend, De Panne and Koksijde have interesting individual boutiques.

Nature
Nature
On first glance, the Flemish coast is a vast expanse of open sandy dunes and wide, inviting beaches which attract thousands particularly during the summer months. In fact it is also home to a plenty of wildlife, birds and sea life tucked amongst the various dunes and channels which attract water during high tides. One of its most famous wildlife sites is Het Zwin, located just beyond the resort of Knokke Heist. Here, a network of cycle trails and walkways lure nature lovers to investigate the various forms of water fowl and wildlife that have made their home in this treasure trove of natural beauty. Here the mix of animal, bird and plant life seem to co-exist in happy synergy.
Culture
Culture
Ostend may have the largest art museum on the Coast, the PMMK (Museum for Modern Art), but Koksijde is well-known for its Paul Delvaux museum, while historic monuments are to be found in De Panne and Nieuwpoort. Events are held year round, in every resort along the coast.
Tradition
Tradition
All along the coast, you'll find a broad range of quirky historical traditions thathave stood the test of time and still continue to this day. One of which is the unique horse-back shrimping which takes place in the resort of Oostduinkerke. Modern fishing techniques are ditched in favour of age old shrimp fishing in low tide. In another, the bravest of swimmers take to the ice cold North Sea coastal waters in an annual challenge which always takes place in the early days of the New Year.
