Art & Architecture

There is a wealth of art and architecture to be found in Leuven. From the whimsical Gothic Town Hall to the UNESCO listed St Peter's Church with its 50 metres high tower.

However, the wealth of architecture in Leuven is worth a visit in itself. Start with the Groot Begijnhof, which is the largest beguinage in the world covering approximately 8 hectares and recognised as one of the world’s best remaining examples. Bought by the university in the early 1960s, it has since been restored to full glory and is used as accommodation for up to 300 students, as well as visiting professors.

The Grote Markt is another must-see, both for the High Gothic 15th century Stadhuis (Town Hall) and the cathedral of St Pieterskerk – its 50-metre tower is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes all the Belfries of Belgium & France. A quirky touch is the 20th century addition to the church, which houses a new hourly chime.

Wander the quiet streets to the south-east of the Grote Markt and you will stumble across any number of impressive university buildings. Keep an eye out for Van Dale College, which was founded in 1558; the University Library on Monseigneur Ladeuzeplein; and the Linen Hall on Naamsestraat, which is early Gothic with a Baroque second floor and is now used as an administrative centre by the University.

Art lovers should visit the Treasury of St Peter's Church where two of the greatest works of Dirk Bouts, The Last Supper and the Martyrdom of St Erasmus are to be found
