Cloth Hall

Visit the Stedelijk Municipal Museum with its collection of paintings from the 16th century to the present day depicting the city's history and the Belle Almhouse Museum, which has - among others - a picture of the Blessed Virgin on display that dates to 1420 and is one of the oldest paintings in Belgium.

The earliest buildings of Medieval Ypres surround the Grote Markt. The construction of the Lakenhalle (Cloth Hall), still impressive and considered an amazing feat at the time, was completed in 1304; the lower floor served as the sales room while the upper floor was for storing the cloth. The Cloth Hall can be visited, as In Flanders Fields museum is located on the first floor.

At the eastern end of the Cloth Hall is the Nieuwerck (Town Hall), which dates to 1619 and has a Gothic appearance, though some of the decorations are more Renaissance. Used as the city administration block, only the council chamber is open to the public, so that the late 19th century stained glass window by Arno Brys can be admired.

Other buildings worthy of a peek are the Gothic St Martin's cathedral, on which work started in 1221; the 17th century guild houses on Veemarkt; the Meat House on the Grote Markt, the ground floor of which was erected in 1275, the second floor in the first half of the 16th century; and the 1899 Toll House in the fish market. And don't forget the solid 17th century city ramparts, along which it is possible to walk.
